How AI should work with ERP, CRM, commerce, and finance systems
AI systems create the most value when they sit alongside systems of record, not when they try to replace them.
Core business systems such as ERP, CRM, commerce, and finance platforms hold the transactional record the organisation depends on. Replacing them to introduce AI capability is rarely necessary and often destabilising.
A more durable pattern treats these systems as systems of record and builds an AI-enabled decision or workflow layer above them: pulling context, presenting evidence, and returning approved actions back into the systems of record through existing integration points.
This pattern preserves the auditability and stability the core systems provide, while allowing AI capability to evolve independently and more quickly than a core system's release cycle would otherwise allow.
The practical implication for technology leaders: evaluate AI initiatives on how cleanly they integrate with existing systems of record, not only on the sophistication of the AI model involved.
